1.Two substances are said to be miscible,if they mixes well on mixing together.e.g salt and water

Two substances are said to be immisicible if they do not mixes well on mixing together.e.g salt and benzene.

2. Transparent substances are those through which light can pass through easily and completely e.g glass.

Translucent substances are those through which light can pass through partially e.g oiled paper.

3. Liquid and gas are both fluids but liquids are more densier than gas.

1. Material  2.Substance   3. Atom 4. Solid 5. Classification

J. Short answer questions:-

1. Matter is one which have volume, mass and occupy space.

A substance is a particular kind of matter.

Material is a matter from which a thing can be made.

2. Three States of matter are solid, liquid and gas.

3. Density of a substance is mass per unit volume.i.e

Density=mass/volume.

4. A ductile material is one which can be drawn into wires e.g gold.

5. Metals

(i). Have ductility

(ii). Have lustre

Non metals

(i). Do not have ductility.

(ii). Do not have lustre.

K. Long answer questions:-

1. States of matter

The matter can exist in any of the three forms like solid, liquid and gas.

Solid- Matter that occupies  a definite shape and mass is called solid. The molecules of solids are arranged in such a way that they are very close to each other. There is little intermolecular spaces among them. So, solid molecules are tightly packed.

Liquid- Matter that occupies a definite space or volume but no definite shape is called liquid. the molecules of liquid are less tightly packed and away from each other.

Gas- Gas is one of the three fundamental States of matter. compared to the other States of matter (solids and liquids) gases have low density and viscosity. They have neither any shape or volume.

2.A transparent substance is one through which light can pass through easily e.g glass, water.

A translucent substance is one through which light can pass partially e.g oiled paper, lampshade.

an opaque material is one through which light cannot pass e.g wood, stone.

3. Lustre- A thin coating which gives shiny and bright pledge to things is called lustre. Metals have a shiny appearance or in other words they have a metallic lustre. Because of this metal cluster metals are used for making jewelry and other decorative articles. Gold, bronze,e silver are lustrous materials.

4. Solubility- Salt and sugar dissolve completely in water. These are called soluble materials. on the other hand sand, chalk do not dissolve in water even after vigorous the stirring, such material are called insoluble materials.

Similarly the substances which mix with water to form a solution are known as miscible substances. Solutions which do not get mixed with water and form a separate layer, are called immiscible  substances.

5. Softness or hardness is yet another property on which materials can be grouped. Certain materials are smooth whereas some are rough to touch. For example,

e.g Silk is smooth and rock is hard. Material which can be compressed are said to be soft where as the materials which cannot be compressed are said to be hard.

Some substances, such as wood is very strong and hence difficult to break whereas other such as a rubber band and cloth are flexible and can be bend easily.

Hard materials, such as diamond cannot be scratched easily where is soft material such as butter can be scratched easily.

6. Flotation/ Density

The mass per unit volume of a substance is called density of that substance. The substances having density more than water will sink in water and are called heavier. But those substances having density less than water float on the surface of water and are called lighter. for example sand, iron, aluminium are heavier than water while cotton is lighter.

This property of objects that make them float or sink is called flotation.
