J.Short Answers-Questions

1. Animal nutrition means digestion of food by animal.

2. Digestion is the process of breaking down of complex food molecules into simpler molecules and it is brought about with the help of enzyme.

3. Saliva contain enzymes  amylase which help in initial digestion.

4.  It is mouth cavity, it contains teeth.

5. Oesophagus or gullet.

6. The inner wall of small intestine have millions of finger like outgrowths called villi.

7. We have two types of teeth -

 (a) Temporary set.   (b) Permanent set.

8. Ruminants are hooved, plant eating animal which digest their food in two steps.

Same example are cows, buffaloes, goats, sheep. They have complicated stomach consisting  of four chambers.

K.Long-Answer Question:-

1. Human alimentary canal (organs) can be divided into following plarts:---

 1. Mouth and buccal cavity.

2.Oesophagus or food pipe or gullet.

 3. Stomatch.

 4. Small intestine.

 5. Large intestine.

 6. Rectum.

  7. Anus.

Food is taken through the mouth. This is called ingestion. The mouth contains the tongue, teeth and salivary gland. Saliva contains an enzyme called amylase that breaks down the starch present in the food to simpler sugar.

Food pipe play on role in digestion, through it only food goes and meets the stomach.

The inner lining of the stomach secrete mucus, hydrochloric acid and digestive juice which perform the following functions:-

• The mucus protect the inner lining of the stomach.

• The acid kills the bacteria which enters along with the food.

• The digestive juices help to break down the proteins into simpler substances.

Digestion in small intestine is carried out with the help of:-

•  Secretions from liver and pancreas.

• Digestive juices secreted by the small intestine.

Large intestine has no digestive function. It helps in to absorbing water from undigested food material.

The undigested waste material pass into the rectum, when it is store as semi solid faeces.

The faces remain temporily stored in rectum where it is removed by an opening called anus.

2. Liver secrete bile juice of green colour. The bile juice is collected into gal bladder. It comes into the gall bladder through the bile duct. It does not have any digestive juice in itself but it plays an important role in digestion of fats.

It is breaks down large fat droplets into tiny droplets so that digestive enzyme can act on them easily. It also makes the food alkaline so that pancreatic juice (secreted by pancreas) can act on it.

3.  The large intestine is about 1.5 mt. long. It is called large intestine because it is a quite wide tube. The undigested and unabsorbed food from the small intestine enters into large intestine. The large intestine absorb most of the water from the undigested food material. Due to the removal of water, the undigested food became semi- solid.

4. Sticky food item like toffee, chocolate etc are major cause of tooth decay. Hence, in order to protect our teeth,we should avoid eating sweet and sticky food item. We should clean our teeth with a brush for dental floss twice a day to remove food particle sticking between teeth. We should rinse our mouth with water after every meal and should have food rich in calcium and phosphorus. We should not put dirty finger or any unwashed object in the mouth.

5. Human develop two different set of teeth in our lifetime, the temporary set and permanent set.

(a) The temporary set- This is set that start appearing at the age of about two and a half years. It plays a very important role in a proper alignment of the permanent teeth. These are also called milk teeth. There are 20 milk teeth in the temporary set.

(b). The permanent set- There are 32 teeth in permanent set, 16 inch each jaw. These teeth are called incisors, canines, molars and premolars.

6. There are 32 teeth in a permanent set, 16 in each jaw. Depending on the structure and function of teeth are of the following types:-

Incisors-- These are flat and blade like teeth placed at the front. They are used for cutting food.

Canines-- These are sharp and pointed teeth which are present on either side of the incisors. They are used for tearing food.

Molar and premolars--- These are broad teeth used for crushing and grinding the food. The last molar in both ends of upper and lower jaws appear only after the age of 18 years. These two pairs of teeth are called wisdom teeth.

7. Nutrition in Ruminants ---- Ruminants are hooved, plant eating animals which digest their food in two steps some example are cows, buffaloes, goats, ships and bison. They have complicated stomatch consisting of four chamber.

Food that is swallowed goes into the fist  chamber called the rumen. Here it is partially digested and it is called cud. It goes to the second chamber where it is returned to the mouth for thorough chewing. The process is called rumination. That is why this animal are called ruminants.

8. In ruminants food that is swallowed goes into the first chamber called the rumen. Here it is partially digested and it is called cud. If them goes to the second chamber from where it is returned to the mouth for thorough chewing. After chewing, the food is swallow for a second time and then digested further in the remaining two chamber. It is finally sent to the small intestine, where the absorption of the nutrients occur.

There is one more specific thing about the digestive system of ruminants is that they can digest cellulose, where human beings can not.
